How to Make Homemade Peppermint Toothpaste

Gather all ingredients and let them sit until they are room temperature.  Get a glass or ceramic bowl and mix all 8 ingredients together, pour into a glass jar for storage and use everyday.  To help your teeth stay white, make a whitening mouth rinse of water and hydrogen peroxide.  Combine an equal part of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and Water in a glass, swish around in your mouth for 1 minute then spit out; simple.

Create a Storage System For Your Canned Goods

Create a Storage System for Your Canned GoodsIf you are just starting into the world of canning or have been canning goods for a while, you will have to organize all your jars and equipment.  If you are newer to canning, it will feel like every canning season you have to organize and re-organize everything…..and that is because you do as your jars and equipment expand.   Here are ways to create a storage system for your canned goods in order to keep everything manageable and expandable.

Expandable Shelving

I am a big fan of the IKEA Ivar System shelving because it is modulCanning Storage System Includes Different Areas of Organizationar and I can keep adding or taking away shelves as needed.   The 11″ deep shelves are perfect for fitting 4 pint jars deep or 3 quart jars deep.  The Ivar shelving units can all be bought individually; the uprights on either side of the shelf and then the shelves.  If you have a corner, like I do, there are also corner units than easily add on to the traditional shelving units.  I use the larger corner shelves to store the larger items like: the pressure canner, water bath stock pot, fermentation crock, etc.

Dewey Decimal System

Okay, so the Dewey Decimal System doesn’t work for canned goods.  However, you should create a storage system for your canned goods  based on the type of … READ MORE...

Bentonite Clay Deodorant (without Baking Soda)

Tired of irritating deodorants?  Tired of other homemade deodorants that melt in the summer?  This recipe solves both problems and smells great!

My Story

I figured with summer around the corner it would be nice to smell fresh and clean.   Truthfully, I haven’t worn deodorant for a while (including last summer); about two years ago Bentonite Clay Deodorant - COLROADO URBAN HOMESTEADERI ran out of the store bough stuff in the winter time and just never bought another deodorant stick.  If there was something really important that I needed to smell presentable for or an extra hot day where I would be around a lot of people, I would steal my husband’s store bought deodorant and just smell a little manly for the day.  I remember my body getting use to not having deodorant and kinda going through a pit detox if you will.  After a while, I just wasn’t stinky anymore.  Occasionally, I would think to myself “wow I stink” and then I would go take a shower and that would solve the problem.

Since I have been without deodorant for so long, I am not sure where the urgent need to make my own came from.  I think I just miss smelling good all day long, and by creating a homemade and good smelling deodorant, I can achieve that.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap was one of the first things that I started making myself when I decided to become a homesteader.  I liked knowing that it is EXTREMELY cheap to make and doesn’t contain any added syntheticHomemade Liquid Laundry Soapc perfumes that make my clothes smell and my nose go crazy.

This recipe for homemade liquid laundry soap is great for both the traditional and energy efficient washing machines.    As you can see from the pictures, I have tweaked the recipe until I found something that worked for me.   That is the best thing about being a homesteader…you must be part mad-scientist when crafting homemade recipes.   Try my recipe first, but if it doesn’t work for you, tweak it.

Cleaning Your BBB (Boar Bristle Brush)

An essential part of the No-Poo regime is the use of a Boar Bristle BrushHow to Clean your Boar Bristle Brush.  The Boar Bristle Brush (BBB) is excellent at cleaning your hair as well as redistributing the natural oils down the length of the strand so the oil is not concentrated at the roots, making your hair look greasy.

I have been doing No-Poo for two and a half years with great success.  Check out my other No-Poo related articles by clicking on the ‘No-Poo’ Page at the top.

With all the redistributing of oil, it is natural for your brush to get greasy and will need to be cleaned.

Step 1: Gather your Boar Bristle Brush, your standard brush and your comb.
