Homemade Peppermint Toothpaste

Making your own homemade peppermint toothpaste couldn’t be easier!  It’s as simple as mixing 8 ingredients together and storing it in a jar.  This homemade peppermint toothpaste adds trace minerals to help re-mineralize your teeth and does NOT contain any fluoride.

How to Make Homemade Peppermint Toothpaste

Gather all ingredients and let them sit until they are room temperature.  Get a glass or ceramic bowl and mix all 8 ingredients together, pour into a glass jar for storage and use everyday.  To help your teeth stay white, make a whitening mouth rinse of water and hydrogen peroxide.  Combine an equal part of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and Water in a glass, swish around in your mouth for 1 minute then spit out; simple.

Bentonite Clay Deodorant (without Baking Soda)

Tired of irritating deodorants?  Tired of other homemade deodorants that melt in the summer?  This recipe solves both problems and smells great!

My Story

I figured with summer around the corner it would be nice to smell fresh and clean.   Truthfully, I haven’t worn deodorant for a while (including last summer); about two years ago Bentonite Clay Deodorant - COLROADO URBAN HOMESTEADERI ran out of the store bough stuff in the winter time and just never bought another deodorant stick.  If there was something really important that I needed to smell presentable for or an extra hot day where I would be around a lot of people, I would steal my husband’s store bought deodorant and just smell a little manly for the day.  I remember my body getting use to not having deodorant and kinda going through a pit detox if you will.  After a while, I just wasn’t stinky anymore.  Occasionally, I would think to myself “wow I stink” and then I would go take a shower and that would solve the problem.

Since I have been without deodorant for so long, I am not sure where the urgent need to make my own came from.  I think I just miss smelling good all day long, and by creating a homemade and good smelling deodorant, I can achieve that.

Cleaning Your BBB (Boar Bristle Brush)

An essential part of the No-Poo regime is the use of a Boar Bristle BrushHow to Clean your Boar Bristle Brush.  The Boar Bristle Brush (BBB) is excellent at cleaning your hair as well as redistributing the natural oils down the length of the strand so the oil is not concentrated at the roots, making your hair look greasy.

I have been doing No-Poo for two and a half years with great success.  Check out my other No-Poo related articles by clicking on the ‘No-Poo’ Page at the top.

With all the redistributing of oil, it is natural for your brush to get greasy and will need to be cleaned.

Step 1: Gather your Boar Bristle Brush, your standard brush and your comb.

My Legs are Hairier Than My Husband’s

After battling with hairy legs, stubble, ingrown hairs, rashes, red spots, etc. all summer long, I have decided to grow out my hair for the winter.

To be honest, this didn’t start as a conscious decision. Fall crept in, pants became an everyday clothing item and since my legs couldn’t be seen, they became out-of-sight, out-of-mind. A few days of no shaving, turned in to a week of no shaving and then to three weeks.Hairy Legs - COLORADO URBAN HOMESTEADER

At about the three week mark was when I became quite impressed by how much hair I had grown. My legs were hairier than my husband’s! I came to the realization that I didn’t miss shaving, didn’t miss the razor burn, didn’t miss paying too much for razors and that is when I made the decision that I would stop shaving until Spring.

Yesterday was officially the first day of Spring. I reevaluated my legs to determine if they will stay that way for the rest of time or if I will break out the razor.  I have decided that for the next few weeks it will still be pants weather, and so it is not yet time to shave.   I have actually come to like my legs,  the hair is soft and on the rare occasion that I venture outside in shorts, the breeze … READ MORE...

Super Sudsy Body Wash

Super Sudsy Body Wash - Colorado Urban HomesteaderI have been so excited to try out recipes for a homemade body wash, but sadly my first attempt was SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME that I didn’t even bother to try different ones.  It consists of 4 ingredients: Dr. Bronners Soap, Glycerine, Almond Oil & Vitamin E.

This body soap is really sudsy (from the glycerine).  I know bubbles don’t equal clean, but it does help give me the satisfaction of seeing the cleaning in action, and in turn I use less product. You can just as well halve the glycerine and still have a great body wash.

Super Sudsy Body Wash ‘Recipe’

Mix the following ingredients into a 15oz or larger bottle, shake to mix everything together.  Add a nickle-size dollop to a loofah and lather!

This body wash turned out to be fairly expensive (see cost comparison below), but since it is really moisturizing, I have not had to use a body moisturizer or lotion (this body wash has gotten rid of the need for it) and that has saved a bunch of money.
